The ritual is believed to have originated twenty years ago, in 1989 at the acclaimed University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. His aim was to mark the transition between initial course program of science and the onset of clinical training and direct its patient care. This is a formal ceremony in which medical students don – For the first time – the traditional white lab coat that doctors have used for over a century.
