The arts community in an Italian monastery for monks in art | Jon Brooks

Now that the world is experiencing a crisis of capitalism full size, some people are certainly exploring alternative ways of life. Take Betsy and Christopher refuel-McCall, for example. While non-state actors in the race of rats was less life something unusual before convincing a small Italian town to give up her abandoned monastery in a community of artists.

Thus, href = "http://www.artmonastery.org/Welcome.html"> Art Monastery.

"We had this idea that there is life of the monks of art in society, says Christopher. "People are completely dedicated to the scholarship or a trade or high-concept art. The monastery of art is intended to be their refuge."

The project nonprofit has established a relationship with the city of Calvi della € ™ Umbria, 45 minutes north of Rome. After rejecting offers from hotels and institutions, Calvi has granted free use of the convent of the early 18th century Monastery of art project in exchange for the staging free performances and exhibitions.

The town is currently renovating the building, but when complete, the Monastery of Art invited 30 artists to live on a permanent basis, rotating another 12 so temporary basis.

"The 30th will be the focus, culture, discipline and values," says Betsy, herself a professional artist. "The other 12 were injected new energy and hopefully income. "

Before deciding on a monastery, the fueling-McCall researched the different types of projects common life. "We feel that thirty people is the tipping point when it feels bigger than a large family but we still know all," says Betsy. " But it is a bit stale. On the other hand, we talk with the artist residency programs, who said he always new people is exciting, but thereâ € ™ s not a real community. Our model expected to provide the best of both worlds. "

Christopher, who worked throughout Europe as a professional tenor in initially saw the launch of the project in one of the many castles on the mainland for sale. But that style of architecture was too hierarchical. "If sought to put a lot of artists in a castle and the rooms were allocated for education, "says Betsy," which would be like, "He has the best light, she has a better room, you have access to the secret passageway. "However, in monasteries, each room has the same shape, size and sight. It creates a sense of community. "

"And we want to apply the discipline and contemplative nature of monastic life to the production of art" Christopher added. While the company as a whole may seem extravagant, a very practical idea is at the heart of it.

"In many traditional hippie communes, the happiness of the residents is the ultimate goal, "says Christopher." But we have more of a model-driven product, the product quality of work and the difference in the world. The happiness of the residents is a byproduct. "

During the renovation, the project is to rent a bed and breakfast near his home, which raises funds and works in future events as the First Annual Art Monastery Festival, scheduled for this summer.

Some Italian fans have even suggested the franchise the idea to other communities. "Every city in Italy is a ruined monastery on the hill," says Christopher. If we can try this might work once, perhaps everybody wants one. "
